Google Japan has unveiled a unique and portable keyboard called the GCAPS. This keyboard is in the form of a ballcap-like device, which you can spin left and right to select the desired character. The rotation is detected by a gyroscope, and once you’ve chosen the character, you can press down on the top of the hat to send the key codes via Bluetooth. The GCAPS uses an M5Stick C Plus and a micro switch to function. While it is open source and types in Japanese, it is unclear if it types in all caps.

This unconventional keyboard design showcases Google Japan’s creativity and commitment to innovation. By combining everyday objects like a hat with technology, they have created a portable and convenient typing solution. The use of a gyroscope and Bluetooth technology demonstrates the integration of different technologies to provide a seamless user experience. Despite its unique design, the GCAPS is open source, allowing users to customize and modify it according to their needs.

While the keyboard’s primary function is to type in Japanese, it is uncertain whether it types in all caps or not. However, the choice to design it as a ballcap-like device may suggest a reference to uppercase letters. This keyboard adds to Google Japan’s collection of unconventional keyboards, including the teaboard and the long boi keyboards. Overall, the GCAPS represents Google Japan’s continuous efforts to push the boundaries of technology and explore new possibilities in interface design.
