Apple has announced its support for a right-to-repair bill in California, marking a significant shift in its stance on the issue. The company has endorsed SB 244, which would require manufacturers to provide customers and independent repair shops with the necessary tools, manuals, and parts to fix damaged electronics and appliances. In a letter to California Senator Susan Talamantes Eggman, Apple stated that it supports the bill to ensure Californians have greater access to repairs while protecting their safety, security, and privacy. The company emphasized that it will continue to support the bill as long as it safeguards customers and innovators.

Apple’s change in position comes as right-to-repair laws gain momentum across the United States. If SB 244 is approved in California, it will join similar legislation enacted in states like Minnesota and Colorado. While New York passed a right-to-repair bill last year, it underwent significant amendments before becoming law, with exceptions and loopholes benefiting OEMs. The growing popularity of the right-to-repair movement is having an impact, with more people becoming aware of the benefits of repairability and access to repair.

The announcement by Apple is seen as a significant development in the fight for right-to-repair legislation. With the company’s support, the chances of the bill passing in California are likely to increase. This move reflects a broader trend across the US, as more states recognize the importance of allowing consumers and independent repair shops access to the tools and information necessary to fix electronic devices. The right-to-repair movement appears to be gaining traction, making it increasingly difficult for opponents to argue against it.
