Apple unveiled new MacBook Pro computers and announced the release of three new chips that will power their laptops and desktops. The company also revealed that they have redesigned their graphics processing units (GPU), an area of the chip where Nvidia currently dominates the market. Since moving away from Intel and utilizing their own custom-designed chips in 2020, Apple’s Mac business has experienced significant growth, with market share nearly doubling to around 11%. Apple’s custom chips have provided better battery life and performance than machines using Windows operating systems.
Apple’s advancements in GPU technology have been particularly notable, according to Johny Srouji, Apple’s chip chief. The Mac business generated $40.18 billion in revenue for Apple in fiscal year 2022, accounting for approximately 11% of their total revenue. While this marked a 14% increase from the previous fiscal year, sales have slowed in line with the overall slump in the PC industry caused by the post-pandemic landscape. Industry analysts anticipate that the M3 chip will be manufactured using 3-nanometer technology at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, the same technology used for top-end iPhone 15 models.
Apple’s success in the Mac business, driven by their custom-designed chips, has prompted competitors like Qualcomm and Nvidia to intensify their efforts in developing Arm-based chips for Windows PCs. Qualcomm recently announced plans to release a chip that surpasses Apple’s offerings in terms of both speed and energy efficiency, while Nvidia is aiming to enter the PC market by 2025. Apple’s continued innovation and dominance in the GPU market suggest that they will maintain their position as a major player in the computing industry for the foreseeable future.
