Apple has released the iOS 17.0.3 update for iPhone users, along with a new version of iPadOS, 17.0.3, for iPad users. This update comes a week after the launch of iOS 17.0.2. The main focus of the iOS 17.0.3 update is to address a significant overheating issue that was affecting the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Customers had been complaining that these models were getting too warm and even shutting down in some cases. Apple confirmed the bug in late September and assured customers that it would be fixed with an update to iOS 17.
Apple also addressed a kernel vulnerability in both the iOS 17.0.3 and iPadOS 17.0.3 updates. This vulnerability could potentially allow an attacker to gain elevated privileges. The company acknowledges that this flaw was exploited in earlier versions of iOS prior to iOS 16.6. Overall, these updates aim to improve the performance and security of Apple’s devices.
Despite speculations about the titanium frame of the iPhone 15 Pro being the cause of overheating, Apple clarified that it was not at fault. The company maintains that the titanium and aluminum design of the iPhone 15 Pro actually provides better heat dissipation than previous models with stainless steel frames. Apple also stated that it has no plans to lower processor performance to fix the issue. Instead, the company has been working with app developers to optimize their apps and resolve any compatibility issues that may be contributing to the overheating problem.
