The ongoing trend of tech labor struggles continues as Bandcamp lays off nearly half of its employees. This news was shared by Bandcamp employees themselves on social media platforms. The layoff comes as a result of Epic Games, the parent company of Bandcamp, selling the business to a music licensing company called Songtradr. In addition to the 830 employees who were recently laid off by Epic Games, another 250 people will be leaving either because they received offers from Songtradr or due to Epic’s divesture from its SuperAwesome ad business. The employees who did not receive offers from Songtradr will be eligible for severance.
Following the announcement, Songtradr confirmed that they have extended offers to 50% of the Bandcamp employees to join their team. They also emphasized their commitment to maintaining the same Bandcamp experience. This acquisition by Songtradr raises questions about the future direction and management of Bandcamp, as it undergoes significant changes after being under the ownership of Epic Games. However, the company aims to preserve the essence of Bandcamp and its services, ensuring that users will continue to enjoy the platform as they have in the past. The layoff adds to the string of job losses in the tech industry and highlights the ongoing challenges faced by employees in this sector.
