Batman is continuously being reinvented, with recent transformations including becoming a mech, a ninja, or an imposing figure. The latest innovation from DC turns Batman into a tokusatsu hero in a science fiction narrative. During the C2E2 panel, Kyle Higgins, co-creator of “Radiant Black,” announced the new series titled “Immortal Legend Batman.” This six-issue series reunites him with notable DC contributors like Dan Mora, and includes Mat Groom and Erica D’Urso, the team behind “Inferno Girl Red,” along with “Radiant” colorist Igor Monti and letterer Becca Carey, to craft a new “Elseworlds” storyline.
The plot is set centuries in the future, where humanity has advanced in interstellar space travel and established a galactic empire through the use of dark matter. This meddling leads to the emergence of “Shadows,” soulless creatures that terrorize new colonies. To combat these threats, the Immortal Legends, a trio comprising Batman, Robin, and Nightwing, have learned to harness dark matter to transform themselves into superheroes.
Higgins mentioned that “Immortal Legend Batman” has been in development since he and Mat Groom glimpsed Mora’s tokusatsu redesigns of the characters in 2020. The team’s enthusiasm for the toku genre, evident in both “Radiant” and “Inferno,” inspired them to integrate this style into a distinctive version of Gotham City and its iconic characters. Their collaborative history on “Power Rangers,” alongside Carey, Monti, D’Urso, and editor Matt Levine, facilitated a seamless creative process.
Groom elaborated that the team aimed to explore Batman’s enduring qualities such as determination, resilience, and selflessness, by placing him in a novel setting. In this new narrative, Batman ventures into space as a wandering hero, confronting the dangers released upon the galactic community due to his actions.
“Immortal Legend Batman” is set to launch on August 27, offering a fresh take on the legendary character.
