Mashable’s video podcast, Mashable Say More, features Mashable staff interviewing notable actors, writers, directors, and other creatives for in-depth discussions about their careers, recent projects, and online interests. In a recent episode, Entertainment Editor Kristy Puchko interviewed Danny and Michael Philippou, the filmmakers of the new A24 horror movie Bring Her Back, at Mashable’s New York City studio.
The film stars two-time Academy Award nominee Sally Hawkins as Laura, a foster mother who outwardly appears warm and cheerful. However, when nearly 18-year-old Andy (played by Billy Barratt) and his sister Piper (Sora Wong) move into her secluded home, Andy observes peculiar behavior from Laura, especially in her interactions with another foster child, Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips).
Following the success of their feature film debut, Talk to Me, which was known for its unsettling themes, Bring Her Back elevates the fear factor. A reviewer noted that while the film induced both gasps and screams, it also prompted emotional responses. Although the Philippous described their new movie as "bleak," the reviewer found it beautifully crafted, exploring themes of psychological distress, physical torment, and the complexities of love beyond death.
In the podcast, the Philippou brothers discussed their creative influences, origins in producing online videos, their experiences with a proposed Street Fighter movie, and future projects, including a potential sequel to Talk to Me.
For more insights into the Philippous and their passion for horror, Mashable offers a video by Senior Creative Producer Mark Stetson called "Choose Your Squad," themed around Talk to Me.
New episodes of Mashable Say More are available every Friday on Mashable and YouTube. Listeners can subscribe to the podcast on various platforms.
