A significant data breach at Laboratory Services Cooperative (LSC), a medical non-profit organization, has compromised the sensitive information of approximately 1.6 million individuals. LSC, which provides laboratory testing services to several Planned Parenthood centers, has informed that individuals who have visited these centers may have been affected by the breach.
In a recent press release, LSC stated, “If you, or someone whose healthcare bills you pay for, visited one of these centers and had lab tests done or were referred for lab tests, your information might be part of this incident.” The organization emphasized that the incident did not involve all Planned Parenthood centers, but specifically those that received lab testing services from LSC.
To assist affected individuals, LSC has launched a dedicated website containing frequently asked questions about the data breach, including details about the states where it collaborates with Planned Parenthood. The type of data compromised in the breach varies among individuals but may include medical and clinical information, health insurance details, billing and payment data, and additional identifiers.
Medical and clinical information potentially exposed could include dates of service, diagnoses, treatment information, medical record numbers, lab results, patient/accession numbers, provider names, treatment locations, and other related-care details. Health insurance information that might be affected encompasses plan names, types, insurance companies, and member/group ID numbers. Billing, claims, and payment data that may have been compromised include claim numbers, billing details, bank account details (such as bank names, account numbers, and routing numbers), billing codes, payment card details, and balance information. Additional identifiers possibly exposed involve Social Security numbers, driver’s license or state ID numbers, passport numbers, dates of birth, demographic data, student ID numbers, and various government identifiers.
As a response to the breach, LSC is offering free credit monitoring and medical identity protection services to those who believe their information may have been affected. Individuals who suspect they are impacted can find further information on LSC’s dedicated website.
