The Delta emulator for iOS is set to enhance its offerings with the addition of online multiplayer support for Nintendo DS games, according to a recent update from developer Riley Testut. In a post, Testut shared a video demonstrating a multiplayer race of Mario Kart DS on the emulator, evoking nostalgia for many who played the game on the original DS.
Nintendo discontinued the DS’s online services in 2014. Testut provided insights into how the new online capabilities will function, explaining that they will be based on melonDS’ online support. This system connects to third-party Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection servers, such as Kaeru, Wimmfi, and AltWFC. Consequently, Delta’s over 10 million users will be able to connect not only with other Delta users but also with players on actual DS devices using these third-party servers.
The new feature will initially be limited to Nintendo DS games that supported Nintendo WFC services, according to Testut. The Delta team does not plan to host a proprietary server, ensuring online multiplayer functionality will be free when rolled out.
Users may experience a delay before trying the new feature. It will first be available in a beta version of Delta for Patreon subscribers. Testut mentioned that there is currently no public release date, giving users time to practice Mario Kart DS in the meantime.
