Sony is gearing up to release an upgraded version of the popular PlayStation 5 console, tentatively named the PS5 Pro, potentially by the end of this year. The new console, codenamed Trinity, will feature a more powerful GPU and a slightly faster CPU mode, enabling it to render games with ray tracing more effectively and achieve higher resolutions and frame rates in certain titles. Developers are already being instructed to ensure their games are compatible with the upcoming PS5 Pro, with a focus on improving ray tracing features.

The PS5 Pro is expected to have a GPU rendering speed about 45 percent faster than the standard PS5, with enhancements to system memory and a new high CPU frequency mode that offers more power allocation to the CPU at the expense of slightly less to the GPU. Sony is encouraging game developers to create titles that support both the standard PS5 and the upcoming Pro model, with existing games potentially receiving patches for enhanced performance on the new console. The increase in memory speed and allocations may support Sony’s new upscaling solution, the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), aimed at improving frame rates and image quality on the PS5 Pro.

If developers can meet the certification deadline in August, the PS5 Pro is expected to launch during the holiday season of 2024, following a similar release strategy as the PS4 with a standard model, a slim version, and then a Pro edition. The PS5 Pro launch promises an enhanced library of existing games and new first-party titles with improved ray tracing capabilities, cementing Sony’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge gaming experiences to its loyal fanbase.
