Disney’s planned live-action adaptation of the 2010 animated film Tangled has been paused as the studio re-evaluates its strategy for Disney Princess live-action films. According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources within Disney indicate that the project is uncertain, with considerations on whether to proceed with Tangled or to conduct a creative overhaul.
This development follows the mixed reception of Snow White, which has received a 40% rating from critics and a 73% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Criticism of the film centered largely on the casting of the Evil Queen and the depiction of CGI dwarfs. However, Rachel Zegler’s performance has been widely recognized as the film’s highlight. Despite facing online racial bullying and negative attention related to political posts before the film’s release, Zegler’s portrayal received commendation. Currently, Snow White has earned $69 million domestically and $145 million worldwide, falling short of its $270 million budget, a figure impacted by the 2023 labor strikes, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Tangled had also encountered similar online discourse as seen with Snow White and The Little Mermaid when rumors circulated that Mean Girls musical star Avantika was being considered for the role of Rapunzel. Despite the lack of confirmation, Avantika faced online harassment from critics opposing her casting.
The response to the upcoming release of Lilo & Stitch may influence Disney’s approach to future live-action adaptations. There is interest in observing Snow White’s performance on Disney+, which might echo Encanto’s trajectory in finding success through streaming. The decision to pause Tangled, rather than canceling it outright, could be a strategic move to gauge the performance of both upcoming live-action releases in 2025 on various platforms.
Meanwhile, Disney continues with other live-action projects, with Moana currently in production and Hercules in pre-production, while audiences await developments on Rapunzel’s live-action adaptation.
Disney has been contacted for comments, and updates will be provided as they become available.
