Nearly a decade after its closure, the smartwatch brand Pebble is making a return, albeit in a new form. Eric Migicovsky, the founder of Pebble, has introduced new hardware that operates on an open-source version of the PebbleOS. Due to Google owning the Pebble trademark, these watches are not branded under the Pebble name. Instead, the new devices are being launched under the brand Core Devices, with the first offerings being the Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2.
Pebble gained prominence in 2012 following a highly successful Kickstarter campaign. The company’s smartwatches featured e-paper displays and predated the release of the Apple Watch. Pebble watches allowed users to receive notifications, customize watch faces, and access an app store, all while maintaining week-long battery life with an always-on display. However, Pebble expanded too rapidly and failed to meet sales expectations, leading to its acquisition by Fitbit. Subsequently, Google acquired Fitbit, including Pebble’s assets.
Despite the brand’s discontinuation, Pebble smartwatches remained operational for some time, thanks to Fitbit’s support and a dedicated fanbase. This community of developers and enthusiasts initiated the Rebble project, which replaced Pebble’s web services after Fitbit discontinued them, ensuring that the watches’ core functions remained available.
Migicovsky’s ability to launch new hardware powered by PebbleOS was facilitated by Google’s decision to release the source code in January. Eric Migicovsky expressed gratitude for this move, acknowledging that without Google’s decision, the current developments would not have been possible.
Core Devices, the new venture by Migicovsky, is a reference to the Pebble Core, a product that never hit the market. Operating as a small-scale business, it comprises Migicovsky, one full-time employee, and a few contractors. Taking a cautious approach, Migicovsky has decided to limit production to approximately 10,000 units for the Core 2 Duo and slightly more for the Core Time 2. Preorders for these watches are currently available.
Migicovsky emphasizes his strategy to build a sustainable company without the pressures of rapid growth. By focusing on small, manageable product releases, Migicovsky aims to deliver quality products that satisfy consumers, with the possibility of expanding further in the future.
