In “Echoes of Wisdom,” Nintendo’s latest top-down Zelda game for the Nintendo Switch, distinct influences from “Breath of the Wild” and “Tears of the Kingdom” can be observed. Despite its open-world design and focus on player autonomy, the game’s standout feature is an innovative adaptation of a less successful element from the 2019 “Link’s Awakening” remake.
The recent “Link’s Awakening” remake, produced by Grezzo, diverged from its Game Boy origin with a toy-like 3D style, enhanced controls, and a dungeon creation mode reminiscent of “Super Mario Maker.” In this mode, players could construct custom dungeons in a mysterious shack using tiles from previously explored rooms.
However, “Chamber Dungeons” lacked the element of surprise since players controlled the contents, adhering to specific tile arrangement rules. Although useful for earning rupees, the absence of an online sharing system, a major appeal of “Super Mario Maker,” limited their impact.
“Echoes of Wisdom,” while introducing Zelda as a playable protagonist, largely abandons the traditional Chamber Dungeons mechanic. Instead, the game reimagines these concepts creatively.
In “Echoes of Wisdom,” Zelda, alongside her companion Tri, embarks on an adventure armed with the Tri Rod, a magical item akin to the Cane of Somaria from “A Link to the Past.” Unlike the Cane, which created single blocks, the Tri Rod enables Zelda to summon multiple copies (or “echoes”) of various objects and monsters encountered.
While the game includes other useful items, the echoes generated by the Tri Rod are Zelda’s most potent weapons in her quest to close interdimensional rifts across Hyrule. Some echoes, like the Boomerang Boarblin and Bombfish, quickly replicate classic Zelda weapons. However, most echoes are replicas of hostile creatures like ReDeads and Darknuts found in the game’s overworlds and dungeons.
Initially, echoes seemed to parallel the weapon strategies from “Breath of the Wild” and “Tears of the Kingdom.” However, director Tomomi Sano and series producer Eiji Aonuma revealed that the concept originated from a plan for a game based on custom dungeon creation.
During development, Aonuma noted the fun in creating dungeons and suggested that using copy-paste mechanics for items could introduce unique gameplay elements. This idea evolved into focusing on “echoes,” transforming the initial dungeon-building focus into a new way of playing “The Legend of Zelda.”
“Echoes of Wisdom” revisits traditional Zelda elements, such as themed dungeons filled with puzzles and minibosses. Despite Zelda’s limited ability to alter literal dungeon designs, the game cleverly transforms the entire expanse of Hyrule into a conceptual dungeon, placing players in a strategic design role.
In gameplay, learning to utilize echoes for movement and combat effectively turns Zelda into a dungeon master, reshaping her world using familiar elements. This approach emphasizes interaction with monsters and environmental hazards, paralleling traditional dungeon dynamics.
Nintendo’s latest installment ingeniously reinvents classic Zelda concepts, presenting Zelda as a powerful figure who reshapes her environment and uses its rules to her advantage. This narrative highlights her dual role as a princess and dungeon master, showcasing Nintendo’s mastery in refreshing “The Legend of Zelda” with innovative gameplay after 40 years.
