The 2020 PlayStation success, Ghost of Tsushima, is set to receive a sequel titled Ghost of Yōtei, which will introduce a new protagonist, era, and landscape. Scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 in 2025, this new installment features an entirely fresh narrative.
Ghost of Yōtei will center on a new character named Atsu, who traverses the area surrounding Mount Yōtei in Ezo—known today as Hokkaido—in the year 1603. This timeline places the sequel 300 years after the original Ghost of Tsushima, which was set during the Mongol invasion of that island. In 1603, Yōtei was not yet under Japanese dominion, a fact that the debut trailer highlights with scenes of unspoiled grasslands, snowy forests, and sunlit ridges adorned with wildflowers. The trailer’s soundtrack features a distinctive cowboy-like twang, especially noticeable as Atsu interacts with wild horses and encounters a wolf.
According to the PlayStation Blog, Sucker Punch Productions mentioned that no organized samurai clans resided in Yōtei during this era, providing a foundation for the sequel’s unique storyline.
Ghost of Yōtei represents Sucker Punch Productions’ first title developed exclusively for PlayStation 5. Andrew Goldfarb, Sucker Punch’s communications manager, detailed several enhancements that the new platform enables, including extensive sightlines, dynamic weather systems featuring twinkling stars and auroras, and more realistic movement of wind through grass and vegetation. He also hinted at the introduction of new gameplay mechanics, improvements, and additional weapons. Further details on these enhancements will be disclosed in the future.
