Google announced that it is introducing emoji reactions to Gmail for Android, allowing users to express themselves and respond quickly to emails. Users will see an “Add emoji reaction” button at the bottom of an email, with a picker offering various emoji options. This feature will be available for group emails, where users can tap existing reactions. However, this feature will not be available for messages with more than 20 recipients. Users can touch and hold an emoji to see who sent it and can also remove an emoji reaction by tapping Undo in the notification at the bottom of the message.

If the recipient of an emoji reaction does not have a Gmail address, they may receive an email stating that the person reacted via Gmail, along with a link. This may also happen if the recipient is using an older version of the Gmail app, has Conversation view turned off, uses a third-party email client, or has a work or school account. There are additional conditions where emoji reactions won’t work, such as being in BCC, sending more than 20 reactions to the same message, having a message encrypted with Client-side encryption, or the sender having a custom reply-to address. The rollout of emoji reactions in Gmail will begin on Android and gradually expand to iOS and the web over the next few months.

In summary, Google is introducing emoji reactions to Gmail for Android, allowing users to quickly respond and express themselves in emails. The feature includes an “Add emoji reaction” button at the bottom of emails with a picker of various emojis. Users can tap existing reactions in group emails but this feature is not available for messages with over 20 recipients. Recipients without a Gmail address may receive an email mentioning the use of Gmail, and there are several conditions where emoji reactions won’t work. The rollout will start on Android and expand to iOS and the web over the next few months.
