During the Pixel 8 Pro launch event, Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh showcased a new feature called “Zoom Enhance” that allows the smartphone to retroactively add detail to a photograph when you pinch to zoom in. Osterloh described how the feature intelligently sharpens and enhances the details of images, even when users forget to zoom. A video demonstration showed a blurry, zoomed-in photo of a bridge being sharpened. While similar features have been implemented in smartphones before, Google’s implementation gives users direct control over the sharpening feature.
One notable example of a similar feature is Samsung’s phones, which are able to sharpen photos taken of the Moon and add detail not present in the original image. However, Google’s Zoom Enhance feature allows users to apply the sharpening effect to any subject they choose, giving them more control over the enhancement process. While this feature is novel, it builds upon existing capabilities seen in other smartphones.
Google plans to release the Zoom Enhance feature alongside other new AI capabilities for the Pixel 8 Pro in a series of feature drops that are expected to roll out in December. This update will further enhance the photography capabilities of the Pixel 8 Pro, allowing users to capture and enhance detailed images with ease.
