Universal recently announced a series of live-action Lego movies, set to be directed by Patty Jenkins, Joe Cornish, and Jake Kasdan. However, it has now been revealed that there are actually four live-action Lego movies in development. Among these projects is an adaptation of the Lego Ninjago toy line into a live-action format. Although a director has not yet been named, Kevin and Dan Hageman, creators of the Star Trek Prodigy series, have been chosen to write the screenplay. The Hageman brothers are familiar with the Ninjago franchise, having created and executive produced its animated series for Cartoon Network and later Netflix. Details about the plot of the new Ninjago movie are still undisclosed.
The Ninjago series, which began in 2011, follows a team of ninjas with distinct elemental powers such as fire, ice, and earth, who are trained in the art of “spinjitzu.” These ninjas protect their city from various threats including Lord Garmadon, who is the father of the green ninja, Lloyd, along with time-traveling elemental masters and biker gangs. Both the toy line and the television series remain popular. Previously, when Warner Bros. created their Lego movies, the Ninjago series was the first and only original concept from the brand to be turned into a theatrical film. However, that film did not perform well at the box office.
Readers are invited to speculate on how these new Lego movies, including the live-action Ninjago, will perform once released.
