Jony Ive, former chief design officer of Apple, and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, are reportedly in discussions to collaborate on the development of an undisclosed artificial intelligence (AI) hardware device. This potential partnership follows Altman’s previous collaboration with a former Apple designer, Thomas Meyerhoffer, on the creation of the spherical retina-scanning Orb for Altman’s Worldcoin crypto project. However, the exact nature and purpose of the device being discussed between Ive and Altman remain unknown. It is unclear whether the device will be produced by OpenAI, Tools for Humanity (a company co-founded by Altman), or a third-party manufacturer, or if the duo will ultimately pursue its development at all.
Reports suggest that SoftBank CEO, Masayoshi Son, is also involved in the discussions with Altman and Ive. Son, who has invested over $140 billion into AI-related startups, has previously expressed his ambition to make SoftBank the leading investment company for the AI revolution. It is yet to be determined whether Son will continue to be part of the plans involving Ive and Altman.
