The release of the first “Wicked” movie, along with its upcoming sequel, has sparked renewed interest in “Wizard of Oz”-related content. The original 1939 film, which marked its 85th anniversary last year, is once again in the spotlight due to an event at the Las Vegas Sphere.
Starting in August, the Sphere will offer a “fully immersive experience” of the “Wizard of Oz” on its 160,000-square-foot screen. This updated version, developed in partnership with Google, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Magnopus, aims to enhance the film with modern technology while preserving its original essence. Details about the immersive elements have not yet been disclosed.
This film showcases the Sphere’s new focus on original entertainment beyond concerts and live events, marking the first time an older movie receives an immersive treatment at the venue. Sphere Entertainment CEO Jim Dolan stated that these experiences will provide “a diverse slate that leverages Sphere’s power as an experiential medium.” The “Wizard of Oz” and its subsequent experience, “From the Edge,” aim to advance the company’s vision in varied ways.
The “Wizard of Oz” experience at the Sphere is set to open on August 28.
