The release of the new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models with the latest Apple Silicon and a new design has been delayed, disappointing those looking to upgrade their macOS machines. There are three factors contributing to this delay. Firstly, the market conditions have been unfavorable, with slower-than-expected sales for the 15-inch MacBook Air, resulting in Apple cutting the order book. Additionally, overall laptop and desk-bound PC sales are down as companies transition back to office-based work. With the Mac platform’s move to ARM-based computing already complete, there is less demand for new hardware upgrades.

Secondly, Apple’s next-generation chipsets, designed around the 3nm process, are reportedly being prioritized for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, leaving the MacBook refresh lower on the list. Finally, the possible launch of the Apple Vision Pro headset, which is seen as a moonshot for the future, could also be a contributing factor. Apple’s focus on the Vision Pro and iPhone in recent interviews suggests that the Mac platform might not be given the latest Apple Silicon M3 family, saving it for the headset instead. If there is a silicon shortage, the iPhone will likely take precedence over the MacBook.

With the completion of the transition to Apple Silicon, the Mac platform’s moment to shine is over. Other products, such as the iPhone, have more visibility, priority, and offer a better return. Apple’s decision to delay the new MacBook models should be understood in the context of the larger product portfolio.
