The popular trading card game, Magic: The Gathering, is introducing a new product called Play Boosters, which will replace the existing Draft Boosters and Set Boosters. Wizards of the Coast, the company behind Magic: The Gathering, hopes that Play Boosters will combine the best aspects of both previous products while reducing the number of different items that local game stores have to carry. The change will begin with the release of the set “Murders at Karlov Mansion” in 2024. Although the new Play Boosters may come with a price increase, Wizards assures players that the boosters will offer more value, with increased opportunities to obtain rare and mythic rare cards.

In the past, Magic: The Gathering only had one type of booster pack. However, over the years, the company has introduced various booster packs to cater to different player preferences and gameplay formats. Draft Boosters were typically used for spontaneous pick-up games, where players draft cards on the spot to create unique decks. On the other hand, Set Boosters appealed more to collectors and fans of specific gameplay formats. Play Boosters aim to combine elements from both types of boosters to provide an improved experience for players.

In a blog post by head designer Mark Rosewater, he explained the reasons behind the introduction of Play Boosters and provided insights into the pricing and card distribution in the new boosters. While the cost of Play Boosters will be similar to Set Boosters, the expected value of the boosters will increase due to the chance of receiving additional rare and mythic rare cards. Rosewater acknowledged that players may have to pay slightly more, but the ratio of rare/mythic rare cards per dollar spent will remain unchanged. The upcoming set “Murders at Karlov Mansion” does not have a confirmed release date yet, but it is expected to launch in early 2024.
