Meta has initiated layoffs affecting employees in several departments, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs, according to sources familiar with the situation. These layoffs are not part of a companywide mass layoff but are instead related to specific team reorganizations.
Several Meta employees have begun to disclose their layoffs publicly. Among those affected is Jane Manchun Wong, known for her reporting on unreleased app features prior to her joining the Threads team in 2023.
The Verge has reached out to Meta for confirmation regarding the layoffs and will update the report if a statement is provided.
This recent wave of layoffs comes after a series of job reductions in the Reality Labs division earlier this year. Previously, Meta laid off 11,000 employees in 2022 due to optimistic projections about the company’s growth following the COVID-19 pandemic. Subsequently, an additional 10,000 job cuts were announced as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s “year of efficiency” initiative in 2023.
