Meta is launching a standalone AI app following the integration of Meta AI into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. Announced at the LlamaCon event, this new app allows users to access Meta AI in a manner similar to the ChatGPT app and other AI assistant applications.
To attract users, Meta aims to capitalize on its unique position compared to companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. With extensive data gathered from platforms like Facebook and Instagram, Meta has insights into users’ preferences and social interactions.
The AI app distinguishes itself by utilizing information users have shared on Meta’s platforms, such as profile details and engagement history. This feature is currently available in the United States and Canada, offering personalized responses based on user data.
Users have the option to share additional information with Meta’s AI for future interactions. For instance, users can inform the AI about dietary preferences, like lactose intolerance, which the AI could remember when making recommendations.
Users are advised to consider how Meta might use the data shared with its chatbots. Meta employs its extensive data collections to enhance its targeted advertising, which constitutes the majority of its revenue.
The AI app also features a Discover feed, enabling users to share their interactions with AI with friends. An example includes asking the AI to describe a user in three emojis. These interactions are only shared with friends if users choose to do so.
This feed could potentially amplify trends in generative AI, such as transforming images into styles like Barbie dolls or Studio Ghibli characters. However, not all applications necessarily require a social sharing component, as seen with other platforms like Venmo.
