Google has finally initiated the rollout of Android’s Find My Device network after a significant delay this week. However, the introduction of this feature has shed light on the neglect UWB (ultra-wideband) technology has faced within Google and the Android ecosystem. Despite existing in devices like the Pixel 8 Pro, Google has not fully utilized the potential of UWB technology, limiting its applications.

Although UWB technology offers capabilities like digital car keys and seamless interaction with nearby devices, Google’s Pixel lineup, including the Pixel 8 Pro, currently underutilizes this feature. While Google has included UWB hardware in recent smartphone models, such as the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel Fold, its practical applications remain largely untapped. The company’s failure to leverage UWB even in the rollout of the Find My Device network reflects a missed opportunity for enhanced user experiences.

Looking ahead, advancements are on the horizon as Google plans to introduce features like “Tap to Cast” on the Pixel Tablet that will support UWB-compatible Android phones. Additionally, the upcoming Pixel Watch 3 is expected to integrate UWB technology for seamless unlocking when in proximity to the user’s phone. However, despite these developments, the underutilization of UWB technology on Android devices persists, raising questions about the future and potential applications of this innovative technology.
