Nikon has unveiled its latest innovation, the Nikkor Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S lens, which promises to be the lightest and most compact super-telephoto prime lens in its class. With a total length of 11 inches and a weight of approximately three pounds, the lens is designed to offer handheld shooting at extreme distances, providing Nikon Z photographers with greater mobility and convenience. Despite its compact size, Nikon assures that image quality is not compromised. The lens utilizes a Phase Fresnel (PF) lens element, advanced autofocus, and vibration reduction performance, enabling photographers to capture sharp and clear images of fast-moving subjects, even from a distance.
The 600mm f/6.3 VR S lens features 21 lens elements arranged in 14 groups, with an aperture range of f/6.3 to f/32, and a nine-bladed aperture diaphragm. Nikon claims that chromatic aberration is significantly reduced due to the PF lens element, combined with ED glass elements. The lens also includes a SR lens element to control difficult short-wavelength light, resulting in highly precise chromatic aberration compensation. Additionally, the lens is treated with Nikon’s Nano Crystal Coat to minimize ghosting and flare. Equipped with a stepping autofocus motor, the lens ensures fast and silent autofocus performance. It is also compatible with Nikon’s teleconverters, expanding the range to 840mm and 1200mm. The lens is dust and moisture resistant, providing durability in various shooting conditions. For video shooters, the lens operates quietly, maintains stable exposure, and suppresses focus breathing.
The Nikkor Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S lens will be available for purchase in late October, retailing at a suggested price of $4,800. With its lightweight and compact design, as well as its advanced features, the lens offers Nikon Z photographers enhanced flexibility for shooting at extreme distances. Whether it’s in automotive racing or capturing fast-moving subjects like birds in flight, this lens provides excellent balance, stability, and image quality. Its compatibility with teleconverters further expands its usefulness, making it a versatile tool for photographers who require a longer reach. Additionally, the lens’s video capabilities make it an appealing option for videographers seeking a reliable and high-performing super-telephoto lens.
