The North Korean government is reportedly in the process of forming a new hacking group under the intelligence agency known as the Reconnaissance General Bureau (RGB).
According to a report by Daily NK, a news outlet focusing on North Korean affairs, the new hacking unit, named Research Center 227, will concentrate on advancing “offensive hacking technologies and programs.” This information was sourced from an insider within the regime.
The insider indicated that Research Center 227 is set to study Western cybersecurity frameworks and computer networks. The aim is to enhance the regime’s ability to steal digital assets, develop AI-based methods for information theft, and coordinate responses to information obtained from North Korean hacking operations conducted overseas.
In recent years, North Korean hacking groups have been linked to attacks on cryptocurrency exchanges and companies globally, resulting in significant thefts, including a high-profile incident involving a $1.4 billion hack of Bybit.
The U.S. National Security Agency and the FBI have previously accused the North Korean RGB of conducting hacking and espionage activities.
