DC Studios is set to introduce its new cinematic universe through television with the upcoming animated series, “Creature Commandos,” ahead of its movie debut with “Superman” next year. Warner Bros. and creator James Gunn have been gradually revealing details about the series, premiering a trailer at New York Comic-Con.

Fans who enjoyed Gunn’s iteration of the Suicide Squad may find “Creature Commandos” appealing. Following the narrative of that film and the first season of “Peacemaker,” Amanda Waller, played by Viola Davis, resumes assembling a covert operations team for the US government to undertake dangerous missions. This time, rather than using lesser-known villains, the team comprises darker entities, such as monsters, science experiments, and other non-human characters incarcerated in Belle Reve Penitentiary.

The team includes characters such as two Frankensteins—the Bride, voiced by Indira Varma, and her undead partner Eric, voiced by David Harbour. Additional members are the military android GI Robot, voiced by Sean Gunn, who also lends his voice to the returning Squad antihero, Weasel; the radioactive Doctor Phosphorus, voiced by Alan Tudyk; the amphibious scientist Dr. Nina Mazursky, voiced by Zoë Chao; and the leader Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo. Similar to the Suicide Squad, Creature Commandos are fitted with bombs in their heads, compelling them to confront Circe, voiced by Anya Chalotra, manage their internal conflicts, and attempt to save the world in a highly violent manner.

The series also features Steve Agee and Maria Bakalova. “Creature Commandos” will premiere on Max with weekly episodes beginning December 5, culminating with the finale on January 16.
