Artificial intelligence developers have been criticized for utilizing others’ work to train their models. In response, the world’s largest publishing house is implementing measures to protect its authors from having their work plagiarized under the guise of progress.
According to reports, Penguin Random House Publishing has modified the copyright page at the front of its books to restrict the use of its titles for AI training. The newly added wording specifies: “No part of this book may be used or reproduced in any manner for the purpose of training artificial intelligence technologies or systems.”
The new copyright text also safeguards against data absorption, stating that the publisher “expressly reserves [the titles] from the text and data mining exception.” This amendment references a recent European Parliament directive pertaining to exceptions and ownership regarding text and data mining.
Penguin Random House is the latest publishing entity to counteract the influence of AI models. Earlier, The New York Times issued a cease-and-desist letter to the AI startup Perplexity, demanding the cessation of using its articles and content to assist in generating user responses.
