Qualcomm appears to view Intel’s current business challenges as a potential opportunity. The San Diego-based chip manufacturer has reportedly shown interest in acquiring Intel “in recent days,” according to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal.

While the report indicates that such a deal is “far from certain,” a potential acquisition would significantly disrupt the US chip industry and could raise antitrust concerns. Qualcomm’s reported interest highlights the extent of Intel’s business difficulties over the past year.

Last month, Intel announced plans to reduce its workforce by 15,000 jobs as its quarterly losses rose to $1.6 billion. Additionally, its foundry business has been facing problems, reporting an operating loss of $2.8 billion last quarter. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger recently revealed plans to restructure the foundry business into a separate unit from the main company.

Intel has declined to comment on the report, and Qualcomm has not yet responded to a request for comment.
