The Raspberry Pi Foundation has unveiled the Raspberry Pi 5, the latest iteration of its popular single-board computer. The new model features the Boardcom BCM2712 chipset with four ARM Cortex-A76 CPU cores running at 2.4 GHz and a VideoCore VII GPU at 800 MHz. It comes with options of 4 GB or 8 GB of LPDDR4X RAM initially, with lower variants to be available later. The Raspberry Pi 5 boasts several advantages over its predecessor, including improved MIPI interfaces, MicroSD card performance, dedicated UART connector, HDR support, PCIe 2.0 x1 FPC, Raspberry Pi RP1 Southbridge, real-time clock, power button, and USB Power Delivery support.

Tests conducted by Phoronix reveal that the Raspberry Pi 5 lives up to its promises, delivering significantly improved performance across all workloads compared to the Raspberry Pi 4. This is partially attributed to the first-party active cooler that comes with review units. However, the Orange Pi 5, with its octa-core chipset, proves to be more powerful in certain benchmarks. The Raspberry Pi 5 is priced at $60 in the US (before taxes), which is $5 more than its predecessor, with the 8 GB version available for $80. Pre-orders have already begun, and shipping is scheduled to start at the end of October.

With the release of the Raspberry Pi 5, the Raspberry Pi Foundation introduces a more powerful and feature-rich single-board computer. The enhanced performance is achieved through the use of a new chipset and improved cooling system. Phoronix’s benchmarks confirm the improved capabilities of the Raspberry Pi 5, although it falls behind the Orange Pi 5 in certain tests. However, the Raspberry Pi 5 offers additional advantages such as upgraded MIPI interfaces, MicroSD card performance, dedicated UART connector, HDR support, PCIe 2.0 x1 FPC, Raspberry Pi RP1 Southbridge, real-time clock, power button, and USB Power Delivery support. The Raspberry Pi 5 is available for pre-order for $60 (before taxes), and the 8 GB RAM variant is priced at $80. Customers can expect shipments to start at the end of October.
