A recent article discusses the new MacBook Air and its impact on perceptions of the MacBook Pro. The author reflects on their frequent preference for the MacBook Pro due to its power but notes that the new 15-inch MacBook Air, which Apple provided for a trial period, challenges this preference.

Apple M4 MacBook Air: Price and Specs

The latest MacBook Air offers an unexpected price reduction. The 13-inch model begins at $999, while the 15-inch version is priced at $1,199, a $100 decrease from last year’s models. Apple seldom lowers prices, making this a notable occasion.

The new MacBook Air hosts significant updates, including the new M4 chip with a 10-core CPU and GPU (with the 13-inch model starting with an 8-core GPU), 16GB of base memory compared to the previous 8GB, a 12-megapixel webcam, and a new Sky Blue color option. It supports up to two external displays while using its own screen. The base storage begins at 256GB.

Design and Color

Despite its larger size, the 15-inch MacBook Air remains lightweight and slim, enhancing its portability over the 16-inch Pro. The Sky Blue color is subtle and best appreciated under certain lighting. Although a more vibrant color might be preferred, Apple continues its trend with variants of grey such as Starlight, Silver, and Midnight. The MagSafe charging port is also in Sky Blue, maintaining consistency in design.

The 13-inch MacBook Air is similar to its 15-inch counterpart but is smaller and lighter, weighing 2.7 pounds compared to 3.3 pounds for the larger model. For those valuing portability, the smaller model may be more suitable.

Performance and Sound

Externally, the new Air maintains its look from prior models. Internally, significant updates include the integration of Apple’s M4 chip. Apple’s M-series chips, although not quantum leaps annually, started with the impressive M1 where performance differences between it and subsequent models might be negligible for most users.

The performance of the M4 MacBook Air is remarkable. Benchmark tests via GeekBench show a single-core score of 3,778 and a multi-core score of 14,992, leading in single-core performance and comparable to the M2 Max in multi-core capabilities.

Despite relying on passive cooling and remaining silent, the MacBook Air’s performance might cause heat build-up, especially during intensive tasks like gaming. In a non-air-conditioned environment with hot climate conditions, throttling could occur.

The device tested featured 16GB of RAM, sufficient for varied tasks, with options available for 24GB or 32GB at an additional cost. Storage starts at 256GB with options up to 2TB available for extra charges. The value of increased memory and storage is mitigated by the price decline compared to previous models starting at 8GB RAM.

Display, Keyboard, and Trackpad

The display, keyboard, and trackpad remain unchanged from the previous generation. The keyboard provides a satisfactory experience, though some might prefer the deeper keys of the MacBook Pro. Apple’s trackpads maintain their high standard. The display performs admirably with still images, though the 60Hz refresh rate might not satisfy those seeking a smoother visual experience typical of 120Hz displays.

Webcam, Ports, and Audio

The updated 12-megapixel front camera offers improvements in image quality for video calls over the previous 1080p webcam. While not on par with modern smartphones, this enhancement is significant.

Port options remain limited, including a MagSafe charging port, two Thunderbolt ports, and one headphone jack. Given its capability to support two external displays, more ports would enhance the device’s functionality.

The sound system on the 15-inch model is robust, offering clear and bright audio, albeit with less bass than the 16-inch MacBook Pro. The 13-inch version differs with fewer speakers, likely impacting audio quality.

Battery Life

The 15-inch M4 MacBook Air is rated for up to 18 hours of video playback and 15 hours of web browsing. In testing, it sustained approximately 10 hours of continuous 1080p video playback, aligning with previous models. The battery life appears sufficient for a typical workday.

Conclusion

The new 15-inch M4 MacBook Air presents a compelling option. It is priced more affordably than before while featuring Apple’s latest chip, promising impressive performance and improved battery life. The primary drawbacks identified are the limited number of ports and the display’s 60Hz refresh rate.
