GoPro has introduced several noteworthy features in its latest model, the Hero 13 Black. Notably, the enhanced Log video support is a welcome addition for those who prefer to handle color grading in postproduction software. This new Log profile is considered one of the best seen in an action camera. The Hero 13 Black also offers a new slow-motion burst mode capable of recording 5.3K footage at 120 frames per second for a duration of five seconds. This feature is best utilized for capturing brief, high-motion activities such as a child jumping on a bike or diving into a pool, which can be slowed down for detailed viewing later.
Another significant improvement in video quality is the inclusion of HDR support and hybrid log-gamma (HLG) HDR video. While the Hero 12’s HDR support was not particularly effective, the HLG HDR is an open-source format that provides better compatibility with non-wide-color-gamut displays, resulting in footage that is visually superior to the previous version.
Externally, the Hero 13 retains the same size as its predecessor, but internally, there are notable changes. GoPro has expanded the battery compartment to accommodate a larger battery, which the company claims lasts 10 percent longer than the battery in the Hero 12. Testing shows the Hero 13 consistently records 4K video for approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, sometimes reaching up to 1 hour and 50 minutes with additional ventilation, such as when riding a bike. However, recording times decrease to around an hour in less ventilated environments, like shooting through a vehicle window. GoPro suggests improvements in cold weather performance, but these claims have not been tested. The battery life, while improved compared to the Hero 12, is still behind competitors like the DJI Action 5 Pro, which can run for over 2 hours and 30 minutes in 4K.
One notable battery-related innovation for the Hero 13 Black is the new magnetic charge door, known as “Contacto.” This USB-C pass-through door features a magnetic charger, allowing the GoPro to be powered by an external battery without removing the battery door. While USB-C pass-through doors have been available from third-party vendors, this is reportedly the only waterproof option, ensuring protection if submerged.
