Shogun Showdown provides a challenging experience for players with its focus on tactical gameplay. The deckbuilding roguelike emphasizes strategic positioning, as players are able to see the enemies’ planned moves in advance. This aspect can occasionally lead to difficult scenarios where the outcome seems inevitable, yet successfully navigating these challenges can deliver a profound sense of accomplishment.
In the game, which has recently transitioned out of early access, players maneuver their characters across compact levels to either engage enemies or evade their attacks. Characters can upgrade their "tiles" (akin to cards) to enhance their damage, incorporate perks such as freezing abilities, or reduce cooldown times for more frequent use. Players can stack up to three tiles, enabling a coordinated attack with a single button press to deal with multiple adversaries simultaneously.
The gameplay revolves around observing enemy movements and making strategic decisions about when to attack or retreat. This decision-making process can become complex, often requiring careful thought to survive challenging rounds. However, the effort is rewarded when a series of well-planned attacks effectively clears the battlefield.
For example, the starter character, known as the Wanderer, begins with dual swords that strike both sides and an arrow that can be shot across the level. Through strategic positioning, the Wanderer can attack an enemy behind and shoot an arrow at the foe in front, potentially clearing all threats on the map.
Throughout each run, players can enhance their tiles, acquire new ones, and purchase upgrades, which are familiar elements in the roguelike genre. With thoughtful planning, players can create highly powerful tiles. In a victorious run, upgrading an arrow tile for high damage and no cooldown allowed for continuous arrow attacks without pause.
Players also collect skulls used to unlock new tiles and shop items, which introduces variety to each run. One particular run included a focus on a dragon punch move that propelled enemies into one another, though it did not result in a win, it was enjoyable to see enemies being punched across levels.
Early stages of the game offer a range of content with more characters to unlock and increasingly difficult challenges as players progress through harder "days" featuring tougher enemies and fewer item drops.
Despite the presence of larger titles like Astro Bot and an ongoing Mass Effect trilogy playthrough, Shogun Showdown attracts players with its engaging mechanics and diverse strategies. The temptation to experiment with the game’s weapons and strategies, such as revisiting the dragon punch build or discovering new tactics, remains strong.
Shogun Showdown is currently available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.
