In January, Sony announced its plans to develop a film adaptation of the 2015 PlayStation game Until Dawn. The project has been progressing rapidly, and earlier this month, director David F. Sandberg shared on Instagram that filming had concluded. Screen Gems, Sony’s production division, subsequently announced that the movie is scheduled for release on April 25, 2025.
The game Until Dawn has gained a cult following among horror enthusiasts, notably for its branching narrative that allows for dozens of different endings based on players’ choices. Recently, a remake of the original Supermassive Games title was released by Ballistic Moon, coinciding with the Halloween season. A major question surrounding the film adaptation is which narrative path will be chosen as the plot, and whether the movie will achieve success akin to other game adaptations like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, or face pitfalls similar to Borderlands.
Current indicators for the project appear promising. Director Sandberg is known for his successful horror films Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation. The script is penned by Gary Dauberman, who has collaborated with Sandberg on Annabelle: Creation and also written scripts for other films like It (2017), It Chapter Two, and The Nun.
In adapting the game, which featured notable actors such as Hayden Panettiere and Rami Malek, Screen Gems has assembled a cast including Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Odessa A’zion, and Maia Mitchell. Additionally, Peter Stormare will reprise his role as Dr. Hill in the film version.
