In recent weeks, Marvel has been actively promoting “Thunderbolts” as a distinct departure from typical Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films. While it features prominent actors, they are known for roles in moderately successful films like “A Different Man” and “Midsommar,” and it is backed by creative teams from productions such as “Beef,” “Minari,” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” The studio is emphasizing the film’s unique characteristics by highlighting the authenticity of its stunts.
One notable scene from the movie’s trailers features the character Yelena falling from the Merdeka 118 skyscraper in Kuala Lumpur. This stunt was genuinely performed by actress Florence Pugh, who expressed her excitement about this scene since reading the script. Director Jake Schreier acknowledged Disney’s health and safety team’s initial reservations given the building’s height of 678.2 meters (2,227 feet), the world’s second tallest after the Burj Khalifa. However, Schreier believed the film required an element of “weight and surprise.” Pugh’s eagerness and her trust in the team played a significant role in convincing Disney to approve the stunt.
In addition to this, there is a scene where Yelena walks away from an explosion, which was also executed practically. Schreier mentioned that this was filmed just hours after the Merdeka rig was dismantled. While the MCU has showcased numerous explosions over the years, these realistic sequences in “Thunderbolts” offer a fresh perspective. The release of this featurette coincides with the upcoming recognition of stunt performers by the Oscars, and Marvel might aim for technical accolades if acting and Best Picture categories remain elusive.
“Thunderbolts,” with its array of stunts, is set to hit theaters on May 2.
