In the second season of Andor, Cassian Andor, portrayed by Diego Luna, advances into a leadership position within the rebellion, setting the stage for his pivotal role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. As this final season unfolds, questions arise about the fate of the ensemble of characters introduced in the series, particularly regarding their survival.
In an interview with io9, show creator Tony Gilroy discussed moving on from Andor after crafting a series that paves the way for the events of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Gilroy addressed the possibility of Lucasfilm continuing the stories of Andor‘s characters, both Rebel and Imperial, without his involvement. He acknowledged that Lucasfilm has ownership over the material, expressing that they are free to proceed as they desire. He likened the creation of Andor, including its three-episode releases, to making films, which aligns with the cinematic nature of the series.
Gilroy further elaborated on the expansive array of ideas, new planets, and elements introduced within the show, emphasizing that Lucasfilm has the potential to explore these concepts further. His collaboration with Lucasfilm during Andor was facilitated primarily through Kathleen Kennedy and Pablo Hidalgo, who is regarded as the custodian of the story’s lore. Gilroy recalled his connection with Hidalgo from their time on Rogue One, highlighting it as his main link with Lucasfilm.
Regarding his interactions with George Lucas, Gilroy mentioned having only spoken to the Star Wars creator once, briefly, over the phone following Rogue One. Gilroy described the creative freedom afforded during the production of Andor, recounting instances where they were able to push boundaries, such as setting a scene in a brothel and hiring the production designer from Chernobyl. He noted the significant support they received in executing their vision for the series.
The second season of Andor is scheduled to premiere on April 22 on Disney+.
