Blackout curtains serve multiple purposes, primarily for blocking sunlight, but also for reducing external noise, controlling indoor temperature (by providing insulation in winter or keeping rooms cool in summer), and maintaining privacy.

A recent examination of a variety of curtain options was conducted, focusing on those promising complete blackout capabilities. The investigation included various fabrics such as polyester and velvet, and evaluated different hanging methods including pockets, grommet holes, clips, loops, and even suction cups. Many curtains featured additional linings to enhance insulation and noise reduction, with assessments made on their ability to regulate outside sound and temperature.

The evaluation also considered the ease of installation and various hanging options to determine which methods most effectively blocked sunlight. Testing involved using a double bar, attaching clips, and comparing the effectiveness of using pockets versus loops.

Testing took place on two windows facing southeast and east, both receiving significant morning sunlight, which can cause the room to warm considerably during summer. Each curtain underwent a week of testing at all hours, ranging from early morning with strong sunlight to afternoon, nighttime, and when the door was closed with the light off. Despite residing on a relatively quiet suburban street, noise levels were monitored due to claims of noise-reduction by several curtains tested.

The curtains reviewed are available in various sizes, typically with differing lengths. For full coverage and aesthetic enhancement, purchasing two panels might be beneficial. Accurate measurements of window dimensions, particularly from the curtain rod height to the floor, are recommended to ensure appropriate curtain length.

All tested curtains present diverse forms with options like grommet holes, pockets, clips, loops, and suction cups for hanging. Many curtains offer multiple hanging configurations, allowing for personal preference in installation. The pockets were generally found to be most effective for securing curtains flush against windows and walls, diminishing gaps that allow light penetration.

Once the curtain rod is installed above the window, a task manageable with the appropriate tools, curtains can be unboxed and cared for following the instructions on wrinkle removal. Even complex hanging options typically do not exceed five minutes in installation time, with the exception of the Amazon travel panel with suction cups, which required about 15 minutes for setup and proved more challenging.
