Chromebooks vary significantly in hardware configurations, which can make selecting the right one challenging. Luckily, the Chromebook Plus program has simplified this task by clarifying specifications. Since ChromeOS is lightweight, it does not demand high-end specs to provide a satisfactory experience. Here are some key points to consider when choosing a Chromebook.

Processor: To ensure optimal performance, it’s advisable to avoid older Chromebooks equipped with Intel Celeron processors. The Chromebook Plus specifications provide a solid baseline for rapid performance, recommending at least an Intel Core i3, Core i5, or AMD Ryzen 3 7000 processor. Users should be cautious about overspending on models with Intel Core i7 processors unless additional power is needed for multitasking with Android games, Linux apps, and numerous Chrome tabs. While Intel and AMD are the predominant suppliers of processors, some Chromebooks may feature ARM processors like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 found in the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 3. These are suitable for basic tasks but may struggle with prolonged, intensive use unless newer versions are introduced.

RAM: It is recommended to opt for at least 8 GB of RAM if the budget allows. Chromebooks with 4 GB of RAM are typically very basic and budget-conscious, but this amount significantly restricts multitasking capabilities. To prevent slowdowns, aiming for 8 GB of RAM is advisable.

Storage: Unlike Mac or Windows PCs, much of the work on a Chromebook is web-based, which can reduce the need for substantial storage. However, it is not recommended to go below 128 GB of storage. If the budget permits, having at least 256 GB is more comfortable. NVMe solid-state drives provide the best speed, so checking for those in the specifications is beneficial when comparing models.

Screen: Most Chromebook displays utilize IPS LCD panels, which are sufficient until OLED displays become more prevalent. IPS LCD screens offer superior contrast and color accuracy. In the budget range, it’s important to be cautious of TN LCD panels, as they typically have lower quality and poorer viewing angles. A resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels is standard, delivering crisp visuals on 13- or 14-inch screens and is adequate for 15-inch displays. Higher resolutions enhance display quality, but may affect battery life due to increased power consumption.

Ports: Modern Chromebooks often include USB-C ports, which are now a standard feature. It is beneficial to choose a Chromebook that charges via USB-C, allowing recharging with a portable power bank. A microSD card slot can be useful for expanding storage easily. Some Chromebooks also support Thunderbolt 4 through USB-C ports, which is excellent for connecting to high-end monitors, though it may not be necessary for all users. Similar external monitor support can often be achieved at a lower cost with an HDMI port or DisplayPort over USB-C support.
