A gadget released in Las Vegas can now follow people around and take photos. The HOVERAir X1 can take off from the palm of your hand and record from 50ft in the air or chase after you up to speeds of 15mph. At the basic price of £419, the device uses AI technology to keep focused on you and can be directed through simple arm movements. The feature-filled drone may very well replace the traditional selfie stick, however it comes at a high cost compared to its predecessor.
The drone marks the departure of selfie sticks as tourists now have the option of maneuvering a swam of selfie drones. These drones give users five modes to choose from, ranging from stationary hovering to high-speed chase. Its creators tout that the device is a completely hands-free experience and operates based on the user’s movements. However, concerns remain about the role it plays in an already selfie-obsessed culture, with approximately 92 million taken every day. Victims have reported injuries or deaths from taking selfies, leading to strict prohibitions at premier league stadiums and cultural attractions. Despite some backlash, the device has been welcomed by influencers, for whom professional photographers have become unaffordable.
