Unity has introduced the latest version of its game development engine, Unity 6, designed for creating games and interactive experiences. This new version includes updated workflows tailored for developing online multiplayer games and enhanced tools for projects targeting mobile platforms, with particular support for mobile web browsers on Android and iOS. Unity 6 aims to deliver improved performance, especially in graphics rendering, and offers new features for crafting more realistic environments through global lighting and other visual effects. Additionally, the company has updated its Sentis neural network inference library to enable the use of AI models within the Unity engine.
In the past, Unity faced criticism after it attempted to change its pricing structure in September, which included a model that would impose a fee on developers each time a player installed their game. This proposal sparked significant backlash from the game development community, particularly from indie developers. Following a leadership change and substantial workforce reductions, Unity retracted most of the proposed changes. By September, the contentious fees had been fully eliminated.
