The typical user, unless deeply interested in keyboards or involved in gaming with custom setups, often resorts to purchasing the first available keyboard at retail stores like Best Buy, without much thought beyond its basic functionality. However, a new company, Nuio, co-founded by brothers Tom and Greg Wilson, seeks to revolutionize the conventional keyboard with their innovative product, the Flow Keyboard—a premium, wireless, ergonomic, split keyboard.

Nuio, positioning itself as an ergonomics accessories company, has developed an ecosystem centered around the Flow Keyboard. Besides the split keyboard, the company offers a variety of high-end magnetic attachments such as a trackpad, deskpad, adjustable stands, and wrist pads, all available separately. These components allow users to customize their setup for optimal comfort. The completely wireless design enables usage across various environments—from desks to flights, and even on laps.

At its essence, the Flow Keyboard is another variant of split keyboards, but Nuio aims to redefine the concept of a “standard” keyboard. The customization extends from the keyboard base to the keys, significantly altering perceptions of everyday keyboards. Currently available for preorder on Nuio’s website, the Flow Keyboard is priced starting at $399, with shipping slated to commence on December 1.

Nuio was established by Tom Wilson, serving as CEO, and Greg Wilson, the Chief Marketing Officer. The brothers possess extensive backgrounds in design and technology. Tom Wilson is a former Apple executive with experience in developing portable devices like MacBooks. Greg Wilson previously worked as a designer at the renowned Frog Design and founded his own consultancy, Wilson & Co.

While ideating for their new venture, the Wilsons aimed to innovate a product that had remained largely unchanged for years. With Tom’s experience in hardware components, they chose to focus on the keyboard. Greg Wilson highlighted in a virtual briefing that despite advances in technology, traditional keyboard designs have persisted for over 40 years, merely echoing the layouts of old typewriters.

In designing the Flow Keyboard, the Wilson brothers deliberately moved away from the traditional rectangular shape. Their approach emphasized creating a keyboard that naturally conforms to the position hands take while typing. The design features a 3D wave form with contoured keys that aim to offer a comfortable typing experience, with the enclosure and keys being unique and specifically developed by Nuio.
