Apple has requested the Supreme Court to reconsider a previous ruling in its ongoing legal battle with Epic Games that would potentially change App Store rules. The ruling in question would force Apple to allow app developers to direct their users to alternative payment options outside of the App Store. Apple criticized this ruling, describing it as “breathtakingly broad” because it would not only apply to Epic Games but to all app developers. The company filed a cert petition arguing that the district court’s universal injunction prohibits Apple from enforcing its guidelines against all app makers on the App Store, not just Epic Games.

Epic Games also made its own petition to the Supreme Court, urging the court to review its claim that Apple violates federal antitrust laws with its App Store business. Although the lower courts did side with Epic Games in terms of promoting external payment options, the majority of the ruling favored Apple. As the battle between Apple and Epic Games continues, the fate of the injunction remains uncertain, pending the Supreme Court’s decision on whether to take on the case.

In summary, Apple is seeking the Supreme Court’s reconsideration of a critical ruling in its ongoing legal dispute with Epic Games. The ruling would compel Apple to allow app developers to direct their users to alternative payment options outside of the App Store. Apple argues that the ruling is too broad as it would apply to all app developers on the App Store, not just Epic Games. Epic Games has also petitioned the Supreme Court to review its allegation that Apple violates federal antitrust laws. While the lower courts favored Epic Games on promoting external payment options, the overall ruling favored Apple. The fate of the injunction remains uncertain, pending the Supreme Court’s decision on whether to take on the case.
