Apple has acknowledged a persistent issue known as “false touch” affecting various models of the Apple Watch. Referred to as “ghost touches,” this problem causes the device’s display to respond as if it is being tapped, even when it is not. Initially identified in a memo to Authorized Service Providers in February, Apple indicated that the problem was affecting Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 users.

In a recent memo shared on social media by Stella Fudge, Apple confirmed that the “ghost touch” problem extends to the Apple Watch Series 7, Apple Watch Series 8, and the first-generation Apple Watch Ultra. Despite this widespread issue, Apple has advised service providers not to replace affected units but instead recommend users to restart their device by holding the side button and Digital Crown for 10 seconds. Users are also encouraged to keep watchOS software up to date to potentially resolve this troublesome issue.

The “ghost touch” problem has generated frustration among Apple Watch users, making their devices seemingly unusable at times. Reports on Apple’s Support Forums and Reddit describe instances where the device locks users out due to random taps, glitches, and touch responsiveness issues. While a software fix from Apple is hoped for in the future, users may need to endure these ghostly touches for the time being.
