Spotify praises $2 billion EU fine on Apple for stifling streaming services.

Apple was fined €1.8 billion ($1.95 billion) for anti-competitive behavior towards rival streaming music services in the European Union. Spotify, the music streaming giant, praised the European Commission for its decision, stating that Apple’s rules had muzzled Spotify and other services from effectively communicating with users about promotions, discounts, and subscription benefits. Spotify has long criticized Apple’s 30 percent fee and claimed unfair treatment compared to Apple Music.

The European Commission’s investigation into Apple’s practices stemmed from a 2019 complaint by Spotify regarding App Store policies. Spotify argued that Apple’s restrictions on communication with consumers were unlawful and placed the tech giant at an advantage over competing music streaming services. The ruling compels Apple to cease its anti-competitive conduct in the EU, fostering a free market where consumers have the power to make informed choices about their purchases.

Despite Apple’s plans to appeal the decision, the European Commission determined that Apple’s restrictions on developers informing iOS users about alternative and cheaper music subscription services were illegal under EU antitrust rules. Spotify vowed to continue challenging Apple’s practices until a truly fair digital marketplace is established. The enforcement action signifies a step towards creating a more competitive landscape for streaming services in Europe.
